Coming Soon: Access UBC
Access Association of Disabled Students has received several applications from students with disabilities on other campuses in British Columbia asking for help to start groups. In response to the requests, and because there is strength in numbers; Access has developed a process for creating new chapters.
In September, 2009, disabled students at UBC asked for our assistance in beginning a UBC chapter to establish a Disability Advocacy Centre at the University of British Columbia.
The first step for interested groups is to assess whether the student body at their school will support their goals and aspirations. At UBC, over 1100 students signed a petition in support of a funding referendum question on the ballot for the 2010 student elections.
Students at UBC now have a chance to vote on this referendum question during their Alma Mater Society election which takes place from January 25th to January 29th, 2010.
With the support of funding from fellow students, Access UBC will advocate for greater accessibility and inclusion in all aspects of university life, and for a focus on successful transition to employment for people with disabilities once we attain degrees.
For more information about this (upcoming!) force for inclusion, check out the Access UBC fan page on Facebook.
